The Penny Dropped

I was about to fire up a playlist for inspiration, something I’ve done a thousand times, when I stopped.

What’s the theme of today’s jam going to be? Do I lead with sound design, try to build around a unique sound? Or do I follow a feeling, something I want to express? Maybe I just need to limber up first. Listen to a few favourite tracks, catch a spark. A bass line I like. An arp that pulls me in. Then off I go.

But on this particular day, I paused.

And a thought landed: “Heath, you’ve been absorbing music since you were a kid.” Jean-Michel Jarre cassettes in the ‘80s. DJing from the late ‘90s. Thousands of hours (god knows how many) already living inside you.

The penny dropped.

I already have everything I need.

What if I stopped reaching outward for inspiration and started listening inward instead? What if I trusted what I’ve already absorbed and let that be enough?

It felt strangely freeing. Like locking yourself in a cabin in the woods with no interference and just letting things cook.

This wasn’t completely out of the blue. Earlier in 2025, I’d made another quiet decision, to go on an information diet.

I haven’t owned a television in years, which I love. But I’d widened the net too far. Podcasts, channels, voices, topics. So much input I was filling journals I’d never revisit. The abundance had started creating its own kind of noise.

So I filtered. Chose a few trusted voices. Let the rest go.

And somewhere along the way, that external diet became an internal one too. Less listening out there. More listening in here.

I think there are two types of art: art shaped by the outside world, and art shaped by your inner one.

This year, I chose the inner world.

If any of this resonates, maybe consider this heading into 2026: you don’t need more input. You need more output. You’ve already absorbed more than you realise.

Stop widening the net. Start trusting what’s already there.

You’re good enough. You already have everything you need.

Thank you for reading this year. It means more than you know.

I’m taking a short break and will be back in your inbox mid-January.

See you in 2026.

With gratitude, Heath If this helped you, chances are someone in your circle needs it too. Share it forward.
